The game introduction opens with a virtual council meeting discussing ramifications of losing control of an augmented population, and how to regain that control by assassinating one of their members. In a world where implanted augmentations are just becoming mainstream, there is now a sizeable portion of Humanity that has access to the benefits. But not everyone is convinced, and there are individuals as well as institutions who are against the idea. As a backdrop for conspiracy, this is pretty deep stuff. And it’s very pretty! The graphics are awesome in comparison to earlier Deus Ex outings, and the gameplay is much more slick.
The portrayal of augmentation is interesting, and in the gameplay, it’s a very well done device. Moreover, your actions at certain points influence later plot lines, including which endings you get to experience. Choice throughout is key, leading to a truly role-playing game.
The player takes the role of Adam Jensen, who becomes augmented despite his own preferences (yes alright, that’s a kind of spoiler, but there you go). Beginning in Jensen’s home town of Detroit, the home of his employer’s (Sarif Industries) HQ. The action soon takes a global turn, sending you to China, Singapore, Canada and the Arctic. The story telling is slick. the locations beautifully presented and the action is…well, a little bit console shoot-em-up style, but not all bad.
Early complaints were made that it’s not possible to perform a completely pacifist run-through, because in each of the boss battles, the boss has to die for the player to progress. In the Director’s Cut edition, which this walkthrough covers, more options for defeating the bosses in the game have been introduced, but they still all die.
Enough of the critique, however. This is the Director’s Cut edition, with 2 DLC’s presented in-line in their intended sequence. It’s played at "Give Me Deus Ex" level, and is a pacifist playthrough. Following it should get you both "Pacifist" and "Foxiest of Hounds" achievements, as well as "Doctorate" for finding all the unique eBooks. Furthermore, all the known Praxis Kits are collected, too, so you can maximize your XP. On with the show…
